Hematology-Lymphomas



The clinical hematology Service of the CHU of Nantes supports all types of lymphoma and provides all types of treatment. Many clinical protocols for lymphoma are open at CHU de Nantes (see box opposite).

Understanding lymphoma

The term "lymphomas" consists of various tumors having in common to develop at the expense of blood cells of the immune system, lymphocytes. Since there are several types of lymphocytes, there are also several different types of lymphomas.

Overall, lymphomas are divided into two groups:

Hodgkin's lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease;
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas, divided into two groups
b lymphomas, which are non-Hodgkin lymphomas developing from lymphoid cells called B. Have the most frequent lymphomas (90% of cases). Examples of the most common B lymphomas are follicular lymphoma, diffuse lymphoma with large B cells, cell lymphoma of the marginal zone, cell lymphoma of the mantle...;
T-lymphomas, which are non-Hodgkin lymphomas developing at the expense of so-called lymphoid cells (10% of cases).

Lymphoma-what are the clinical signs?

Lymphomas can reach all tissues but the most common locations are lymph nodes and spleen.
Some lymphomas have no impact on the quality of life. On the other hand, other lymphomas have more or less important symptoms.
The appearance of lymph nodes outside an infectious context, unexplained fever, heavy fatigue, weight loss, often nocturnal sweats are all signs that need to evoke the presence of lymphoma.


Lymphoma-how is the diagnosis established?

The proper diagnosis is essential in the management of lymphoma. Without the right diagnosis, there will be no good treatment. The diagnosis of lymphoma is based on the detection and identification of abnormal cells most often by means of a biopsy (of a lymphadenopathy or any pathological tissue), or by the detection of abnormal circulating cells in the blood. Diagnosing lymphoma is not always easy and can sometimes require several tests.
