stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma life expectancy | Spec Sheet: The lymphoma of the mantle

Spec Sheet: The lymphoma of the mantle

Mantle lymphoma represents 6% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, or less than 1000 cases/year in France.
This lymphoma is rare before the age of 50 years. The average age is 68 years and he touches 3 men for 1 woman.
The mantle is the outer zone of the lymph nodes, the one that surrounds the central part. The mantle of these lymph nodes is composed of a large number of lymphocytes.

In the case of mantle lymphoma, a genetic modification will lead to the abnormal production of a protein (cyclin D1) which will promote the development of cancer cells (multiplication and propagation).

This lymphoma is very aggressive, with a rapid evolution. The chances of survival at more than 4 years are slim and many relapses.

The symptoms are the same as for other lymphomas: Lymphadenopathy, Fever, night sweats, weight loss, etc.

At the time of diagnosis, the stage is generally advanced (stage III or IV) and has already spread. It touches:

Lymph nodes (in 80% of cases).
Bone marrow (in 90% of cases).
Spleen (in 50% of cases).
Blood (in more than 50% of cases). In less than 5% of cases, only blood and bone marrow are affected. In this case, lymphoma is indolent and evolves slowly.
The digestive tract: essentially colon and stomach (in 60% of cases).
The generally proposed treatment is chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

If the treatment is effective and the patient is less than 65 years old, it is possible to make an autograft to stimulate the production of blood cells that will have been destroyed by the treatment at the same time as the cancer cells.
