Life expectancy of Crohn's disease

When I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease one of my first questions was  "Am I going to die?" and also  "Will I still have a normal life?"

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. It is more common in the last part of the small intestine and colon.

Symptoms of Crohn's disease may include abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, weight loss, fever, vomiting, constipation, blood in the stool, skin problems and fatigue. You will not necessarily have all these symptoms, but they may occur.

Not knowing what your life expectancy will be when you have Crohn's disease is a real concern for many people until they find the answer. The good news is that people with Crohn's disease have a relatively normal life span and do not need to worry about it.

There have been major improvements in the recognition and management of Crohn's disease over the last 50 years and the risk of serious complications such as toxic megacolon has fallen below one percent. In the years 1950 the risk of death during severe attacks of Crohn's disease was about 30-60%. Today, these statistics have fallen below 3%.

Natural treatments have also evolved considerably and it is now possible to easily control Crohn's disease. Controlling food and stress can give you full control over your health.

Even if having Crohn's disease can be scary, you don't need to be worried about your life expectancy. There is no reason why you should not live at an advanced age and not take advantage of all the great things that life still has to offer you as to all your fellows.
